Whether you've dipped a toe in decluttering, explored feng shui, or just love a good old-fashioned spring clean, you've likely noticed the peace and calm that come from having a well-ordered home.
You've probably also heard that things like vibrant colors or houseplants can lift your spirits, and you may have even experienced these effects firsthand.
In a hectic, unpredictable world, a joyful home provides a refuge from the pressures of everyday life that not only lets you relax and recharge your batteries, but can reduce blood pressure, improve sleep, and decrease physiological measures of stress.
A joyful home eliminates the things that distract you and drain your energy, making it easier to stick to healthy habits, pursue your goals, or just make time for the things that light you up in life.
The process of creating a joyful home gives you an increased ability to tune in to what makes you feel good. Your home becomes a true expression of you, one you're proud to share with others, and one that makes you feel confident and in control, no matter what life brings your way.
When your home feels like a chore, it's impossible to truly relax and be present with those you love. A joyful home creates a sense of ease that allows people to let their guard down, nurturing intimacy and connection. (The only downside? Your guests might not want to leave!)
We all know that person whose home is totally unique and feels great to be in. And when we ask how she does it, she shrugs and says, "Oh these old things? I just threw them together!"
We've been conditioned to believe that this effortless ability to create a joyful space is a rare gift, the product of exceptional creativity or innate good taste.
But the reality is that the ability to match colors, mix patterns, and create flow in a space isn't a talent at all. It's a skill, one that most of us are never taught but that anyone can learn with the right teacher.
I know this is true because I didn't learn it until I was almost 30. Your creativity is an essential part of your humanity. You can decide to reclaim it at any time.
In a world where we're constantly bombarded with images of covetable spaces via magazines, Instagram, and Pinterest, it's easy to believe that making changes at home will be beyond our budget.
But in reality, most of the changes that have the highest impact on our well-being cost little to implement, and can be done just as easily in a temporary rental as in your forever home. In fact, many don't require spending any money at all.
For many of us, the fear of spending money on our homes goes deeper. We're not just worried about overspending, but afraid that any spending on our home at all is self-indulgent or superficial.
This fear is similar to the one we feel when we invest in self-care, or in anything that makes us feel good. While these purchases have often been viewed as frivolous, the truth is that joy plays an important role in our health and our resilience.
Given what we now know about the power of our spaces to influence our well-being, it's time to recognize our home expenditures not as treats or indulgences, but as vital investments in a healthy, happy life.
With all of the many decisions about colors, shapes, and materials involved in transforming a home, it's easy to become overwhelmed by options and afraid of making the "wrong" choice.
The problem is that most people skip the critical first step in the process: deciding how they want their space to feel. Without this intuitive understanding, there's no consistent framework for decision-making, and choices blur together.
But when you clearly articulate what you want out of your space, the right choices become obvious. Rather than feeling uncertain, you feel confident that each decision is bringing you closer to your most joyful space — and the life that goes with it.
Your home is so much more than a collection of stuff. It's the foundation of a truly joyful life.
When you create a home you love, it's like having a secret weapon that reduces friction and helps you create space for the things that matter most to you.
Even if you've struggled to make your vision for your home a reality in the past, the very best person to create your most joyful home is YOU. Only you have access to your intuition for what feels good in a space. Only you know what your best life feels like to you.
Creating a joyful home isn't a special talent. It's an innate ability that you already have inside of you. All you need are the tools and knowledge to help you hone your intuition and harness it, freeing you from overwhelm and the fear of making a mistake, so that decorating becomes — dare I say it — FUN again.
Once you have this, you'll have everything you need to create a home — and life — you love.
And with your permission, that's what I'd LOVE to show you how to do.
I've taken everything I've learned from more than ten years of studying how to create spaces that cultivate joy (culminating in a viral TED talk with more than 17 million views and a book now published in more than 25 languages) and distilled it into a comprehensive, step-by-step program that guides you through the process of transforming your home into a true haven.
Not only does Design a Joyful Home give you a complete, evidence-based framework for creating a home that reduces stress and enhances joy and well-being, it also teaches you how to be your own designer, giving you a process you can always rely on for tapping into your intuitive creativity and applying it to any space, now or in the future.
The end result: a home that you're excited to come back to, every single day.
Shows you how to tap into your own intuition and creativity
Design a Joyful Home demystifies the connection between environment and emotions so that you understand exactly how to change a space to make it feel good to you. No special talent or design experience required!
Gives you a process you can apply to any space, at any budget
Forget rules or formulas that only work in specific situations. Instead, get a palette of tools and strategies that enable you to break down even the trickiest space and make choices that you know will work, every time.
Uses a science-based framework
The framework at the heart of Design a Joyful Home is based on 10 years of research and findings from more than 200 studies, ensuring that the investment you make in your home will actually deliver the desired results.
So if you're ready to finally create a home you love while avoiding overwhelm and confusion
In this module, you'll hit the ground running with exercises that show you how to harness your natural intuition for what feels good in a space, paired with a dose of science to help you understand exactly why some spaces make you feel energetic and alive, while others make you feel jittery or stressed out.
You'll start applying this to your own space immediately, working through a step-by-step process totake stock of your home as it is today and envision your most joyful life at home in the (very near) future.
By the end of this module, you will have a new understanding of how your space influences your well-being, and a crystal clear picture of how you're going to change it, which will give you a north star that will help you avoid indecision and overwhelm throughout this transformative journey.
Now that you know what you want to change in your home, it's time to get inspired. But rather than go straight to the deluge of images on Pinterest and Instagram, we're going to start where it really matters: your deepest, most resonant sources of joy.
You'll learn how to use the Aesthetics of Joy, the system I developed based on 10 years of research into the neuroscience and psychology of how our surroundings influence our emotions, to define your space and cultivate the specific feelings you're craving in your home.
I'll also guide you through a series of exercises for tapping into your unconscious affinities, your personal passions, and your own life story. You'll emerge with something most people never find: an unshakable sense of your own unique style — a rock solid awareness of what lights you up inside, and how to express it in your space.
Then, you'll channel this newfound awareness into blueprint for your joyful space (no drawing necessary!) which identifies the signature elements that will transform your space into a true sanctuary.
This module is all about building your color confidence!
With your foundation firmly in place, you'll approach color as you never have before: starting from how it feels, not just how it looks. In a series of highly detailed and experiential lessons, you'll learn how to make sense of color perception and how color influences emotion.
Then, I'll show you my process for choosing colors that really work in your space, drawing on your own intuition and inspiration. By the end of this module, you'll have the confidence to create harmonious color palettes that make your space sing.
You know how you sometimes walk into a room and it just feels right, but you can't quite explain why? Or you walk into a space and it feels wrong, but you can't put your finger on exactly what it is that makes it feel that way?
In this module, you'll learn a radically different approach to looking at your space that isn't taught anywhere else. Using my own personal framework, the 5-Point Space Breakdown, I'll show you how to understand the key factors influencing any space, and how to make changes that will feel good to you.
By the end of this module, you'll feel a bit like you have x-ray vision: able to see what's really going on in a space, and able to focus in on the changes that will make the most difference in shaping your home, and your life, for the better.
You've laid the groundwork for your transformation with form and color. Now it's time to layer in those elements that make a house truly feel like a home.
You'll learn how to light your space in a way that feels good to you, and select art and decorative objects that reinforce your aesthetics of joy and express your personal style.
You'll layer in texture and pattern, and choose details and accents, such as hardware, trim, and personal touches that put a subtle, but unmistakable mark on your space. You'll also learn how to select plants for your space — and keep them alive! — even if your only experience with plants so far is the lettuce in your fridge.
The lessons in this module show solutions spanning the budget spectrum, and give you ideas for DIY and thrifted solutions that help you enrich your space without emptying your pockets.
Over the last few weeks, you've learned how to take a space in your home and transform it with color and form, pattern and personal touches, cultivating the feelings you want more of in your life. But what happens when the design is done and real life begins?
In this final module, you'll look at how you take your changes forward into the everyday. You'll learn how to deepen the sensory experience of your home, and extend your design beyond a single room, creating continuity across different spaces. You'll learn how to incorporate others' perspectives into your design, and keep your design feeling fresh over time.
By the end of this module, you'll be able to reflect on the transformation you've made, one that you can not only see, but feel. And you'll craft a strategy for living and learning with your design, so that it continues to evolve and grow as you do.
I created this course because I believe you deserve to have a truly joyful home. Design a Joyful Home is the most comprehensive, step-by-step program for teaching you how to transform any space into a home you love.
You don't need any prior experience in design whatsoever. All you need is the motivation and commitment to do the work.
So here's my promise to you.
By the end of these 30 days, you will have received the first two modules of the Design a Joyful Home course, including 13 video lessons and 10 downloadable guides and worksheets.
Meaning you will have had the opportunity to assess your space, define your style, and envision your transformation before making a final commitment.
If you don't feel confident in your vision and excited about the transformation you're making, simply send me a note at email@example.com, show me you've done the work, and I'll refund your investment.
What people ask before signing up for Design a Joyful Home
Yes! When I say that no experience with design, drawing, or color is necessary, I really mean it. One of the most famous designers in the world, Ralph Lauren, built his entire empire without knowing how to draw or sew! What he had was an intuitive understanding of the feeling he wanted to create, and the knowledge of how to use aesthetics to bring his vision to life. In this course, you'll learn to tune into your own intuition, and you'll learn practical approaches for shaping your space so that it cultivates the feelings — and experiences — you want most out of life.
Absolutely not. The inspirational images floating around on the internet have a way of making us feel like the solution to the problems we have with our homes can be cured by spending more money. But in reality, the changes that have the highest impact on your joy and well-being are highly cost-effective. In fact, I highly recommend you don't buy anything new until you've thoroughly "shopped your home" and discovered what you can move or repurpose. You may find you don't want to buy anything else at all!
And if you do choose to add to your home, what you'll learn will save you money in the long run by helping you avoid costly mistakes and disappointing impulse purchases, and instead make investments in your home that will continue to bring you joy for years to come.
Not only will this program be worthwhile, but I actually created it with specific attention to people who are renting or who don't want to renovate! While traditional design programs ask you to follow rules or formulas that often break under the constraints of a rental apartment, Design a Joyful Home starts with what you have. I firmly believe that we can create joy in any space, no matter how tricky. In this course, you'll learn how to shift focus away from the things you can't change and put the emphasis on your own joy.
Ah, the internet! A place of endless inspiration, where the answer to any design question is just a Google away. The only problem with this is that in a situation that is by nature overwhelming, all this information just adds to the confusion. One design blogger says one thing, one famous DIY expert another. How do you know which direction to go?
All of these resources will give you information, but none of them can give you an end-to-end process that helps you transform a space in a way that feels good to you. So while I am still a huge fan of the internet, and highly recommend you use it as a resource alongside the course, it doesn't take the place of what you'll find inside Design a Joyful Home.
Oh, if only my editor would've let me put this all in JOYFUL! But then, alas, the book would've been a doorstop and no one would've picked it up.
In JOYFUL, I shared my discovery of the Aesthetics of Joy, a framework that connects our environment with our emotions, and shared ideas for creating more joy in our surroundings. What I couldn't do in JOYFUL was go deeper, sharing my knowledge as a designer of how to deeply understand a space and apply that knowledge to transforming your own home.
Design a Joyful Home includes a new guide to the Aesthetics of Joy focused on putting the aesthetics into practice, foundational lessons on space and color that I couldn't include in the book, as well as 19 new tools and worksheets.
No. Design a Joyful Home is released one module each week, starting March 2. I know, I know, we live in a binge-watching culture — but I designed it this way because as I was creating the program, I realized that there's so much material that it would be overwhelming to receive it all at once.
You don't have to wait until March 2 to get started, though! In your member's area, you'll find your welcome video, Project Plan, and special bonus Joyful Decluttering Guide waiting for you. This will help you get organized and prepare so you'll be ready to go when the first module launches!
You also don't have to finish the course in 6 weeks. You have lifetime access, so you can feel free to take your time and go at your own pace.
I created Design a Joyful Home because I've felt the effects of it in my own life, and I want to help more people experience this for themselves. You have 30 days from the date of purchase to try the course. If by the end of that timeframe you don't feel like you're getting results, all you need to do is share your completed worksheets from the first two modules, and I will happily give you a full refund.
Yes! Let me summarize it again for you just below.
This belief, supported by my research over the last ten years, has changed my home — and my life. It's simple, but powerful. Putting these ideas into practice has helped me create a sanctuary that helps me find more moments of joy in the everyday.
I created this course because I believe that you deserve a truly joyful home, and I want to help you design one for yourself.
I hope you'll join me on this journey!
